There is always a lot of talk about blogging and how it can help your electrician website get more leads from Google. Blogging is one of the best ways to show Google that your site is active, helpful and full of useful information for your customers.

The big question everyone is asking at the moment is whether AI can do the job. Can you just use ChatGPT or another tool, generate a load of blog posts, stick them on your website and watch the work come rolling in? Or do you still need to write blogs the traditional way?

With the recent Google core updates, this is now more important than ever. Let’s go through what Google actually says, what we are seeing in SEO circles, the risks of relying only on AI, and most importantly what we recommend electricians do.

What Google actually says about AI

Google has always been very clear that the most important thing is creating helpful, people first content. In other words, content that is genuinely useful to the person who is reading it.

It doesn’t matter to Google how the content is created, whether it is written by a human or with the help of AI. What matters is the end result. Does it answer questions? Does it provide helpful advice? Is it unique and trustworthy?

The problem is that a lot of AI content is not like this. It is often very generic, written in a bland way, and it doesn’t show the real experience of an electrician who knows their trade. Google’s latest update in August 2024 specifically went after low quality and mass produced content. A lot of the sites that were hit hardest were the ones filled with unedited AI blogs.

So the message from Google is simple. You can use AI as a tool, but it cannot replace your own knowledge and experience.

What SEOs are seeing in practice

People working in SEO all over the world are noticing the same patterns.

  • Quality is more important than quantity. You will not get good results by posting ten weak AI blogs a week. You will get far better results by posting one well written, detailed and original article.
  • AI is useful as a helper. It can give you ideas, outlines and structure. But it needs to be rewritten in your own words and expanded with your own experience.
  • Google can usually tell the difference. It has become incredibly good at spotting content that has no real value. AI content on its own often falls into this trap.
  • The best blogs are the ones that show your expertise. If you add your own knowledge, photos of real jobs and proper advice, your blog will not only rank better, it will also build trust with customers.

The risks of relying purely on AI

If you just use AI to write your blogs without adding anything of your own, you risk:

  1. Falling in the rankings. Google does not like low quality content and it can actually cause your site to perform worse.
  2. Sounding the same as everyone else. If other electricians are using the same AI tools, you all end up with very similar content. That does nothing to set you apart.
  3. Missing out on showing your personality and experience. Customers want to know who they are hiring. They want to see you know your stuff and can explain things clearly. That does not come through in a plain AI blog.

What electricians should focus on

So what should you actually do if you want to grow your business through blogging? Here is the approach we recommend.

  • Quality over quantity. Write fewer blogs but make them really good. One proper blog every fortnight is better than five quick AI ones in a week.
  • Use AI only as a starting point. Let it help with ideas if you want, but always rewrite it and expand it with your own experience.
  • Focus on the work you want. Write about the jobs you want more of and the areas you want to work in. That way, your blogs bring you the type of customers you really want.
  • Make it easy to read. Keep your blogs clear and simple. Use headings, bullet points and short paragraphs. Add photos where you can.
  • Optimise for SEO. Naturally include the keywords that matter, like “electrician in [your town]” or “fuse board upgrade” so that Google knows what your page is about.

Examples of useful blog topics for electricians

Here are some ideas you could write about:

  • How to know if your house needs a rewire
  • The benefits of upgrading to a new fuse board / fuse box
  • What is an EICR and why landlords need one
  • How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home
  • Simple ways to save money on your electricity bills
  • The advantages of LED lighting for your home or business
  • Why it is important to hire a registered electrician

Each of these is specific, helpful and shows your expertise. That is exactly what Google wants to see.

Our advice

At My Local Trades we work with electricians every day. We see what works and what does not. The websites that do best are the ones with unique, human written blogs that are written to help people.

The blogs we write for our members are always created by humans, optimised for SEO and targeted at the jobs and areas they want more of. That is why they continue to get visibility and new enquiries.

So while there is a lot of noise about AI at the moment, do not get caught up in thinking you need to pump out endless AI blogs. That is not the answer. The smart move is to put your time into fewer, better blogs that show off your skills and knowledge.

In short, Google rewards quality and helpful content. For electricians that means writing proper blogs that are original, clear and useful. Fewer but better will always beat more but weaker.
